The American Roentgen Ray Society, founded in 1900, is the first and oldest radiology society in the United States. A society of physicians dedicated to the practice and advancement of musculoskeletal radiology. Organized as the Southeastern Skeletal Radiology Society with its first meeting in 1978, the SSR began with about 15 founding members who met informally once a year to show and discuss interesting case material and other topics relevant to the practice of skeletal radiology in the region. By 1989, membership had doubled to about 30 skeletal radiologists, and by 1994, there were nearly 130 members. The current membership exceeds 270 members. The SSR is the organization that represents the subspecialty of musculoskeletal radiology in the U.S.
